Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is provided by huge industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated near the charging area. The route to the post must not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow objects like matches or lighters to be used when somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
