The Industrial Truck Association or ITA has determined 7 different categories of lift trucks. These classes are divided into the kind of work setting; smooth or rough surfaces, outdoors, indoors and narrow aisle; by the kind of engine; whether the operator is standing or sitting down; and lastly the equipment characteristics, regarding the maximum grade and type of tire. Several of the classes are further sub-divided by operating characteristics. Here are the following classifications of lift trucks:
Class 1 Forklifts: these machines comprise electric motor trucks which use either pneumatic or air filled tires or cushion tires. The Class 1 lift trucks also comprise 4 lift codes, or subcategories which are:
Lift Code 1: Stand-up, counterbalanced rider unit.
Lift Code 4: 3-Wheel electric sit-down types.
Lift Code 5: Cushion Tire sit down, counterbalanced rider
Lift Code 6: This grouping included pneumatic tire models, counterbalanced rider, and sit-down rider units.
Class 2 Forklifts: Class 2 lift trucks consist of narrow aisle electric trucks with solid tires.
Category 3 Forklifts: The class 3 lift truck would comprise all hand/rider trucks electric and fuel based with solid tires.
Class 4 Forklifts: Class 4 forklifts are the IC or internal combustion units. These are sit down rider forklifts with cushion tires. Usually, they are great for applications on hard surfaces and indoor application.
Category 5 Forklifts: Internal Combustion sit down rider units equipped with pneumatic tires make up Class 5 forklifts. Typically, these units are ideal for working areas with significant inclines or on rough surfaces outside.
Class 6 Forklifts: The Class 6 lift trucks are either IC powered or electric units. These ride-on models can tow at least 1000 lbs. This specific class is engineered and designed to tow cargo as opposed to lift it.
Category 7 Forklifts: Class 7 only included rough terrain units with pneumatic tires. The Class 7 forklifts are almost exclusively utilized outside and powered by diesel engines.
The different classes of lift trucks help to keep them organized and separated. Various kinds of working environments depend on various classifications in order to get their work completed. Forklifts are quite particular in their loading and lifting capacities. Their different engine types and tire types are made for specific operation.
